Ticks can be a danger, not only to your dog but also to you so it's important to be vigilant when preventing and treating, particularly if you've been out walking in woodland or forest areas. | | | | Recent research from Bristol University has shown that ticks are on the rise and out of 15,000 dogs surveyed, 1 in 3 dogs were found to have a tick. Dogs should be checked daily for ticks and regular grooming is the best way to do this. It's good to get into the habit of checking following a walk before you get back into the car or house. For a quick but thorough check, brush your fingers through your dog's fur applying enough pressure to feel for any small bumps focusing on the underbelly, around the ears and the jaw - be sure to check between their toes, behind ears, under armpits and around the tail and head, too. Knowing what to look for also helps; ticks look similar to small spiders, they're black and have eight legs but a flatter body. It is only following feeding when they increase in size to the shape of a baked bean. | | | As prevention is always best, before heading out for a walk give your dog a spray of the Bob Martin Clear Flea and Tick spray and when out try sticking to footpaths as much as possible, avoid long grass and be aware of wooded areas. Throughout the tick season it is also a good idea to use Bob Martin Clear Spot On regularly to repel ticks helping to keep them at bay, just make sure you get the right spot on for the size of your dog. If you do spot a tick on your dog it is important to remove it safely and quickly, trying to do this by hand can often leave the ticks mouth parts in your pet leading to infection, for a safe removal use the Bob Martin Tick Remover. | | Some ticks can carry diseases such as Lyme disease and Babesiosis which can be very serious for pets and owners. Lyme disease is dangerous and can affect the nervous system so it's important for pet owners to be aware of the symptoms in animals which includes inflammation and stiffness in the joints, and a lack of appetite and energy. It is very difficult to diagnose Lyme disease, especially as symptoms may not occur until up to five months after a tick bite – so prevention is always best. Protecting your dog is important but you also need to protect yourself from ticks. For walks wear long trousers and sleeves to deter ticks from attaching and try light coloured clothing making it easier to spot any ticks you might have picked up. After checking your pet don't forget to check your family – particularly around the armpits, groin and belly button. If you do discover an attached tick remove quickly and safely with a tick remover and go to your GP for a test, Lyme disease can sometimes show no symptoms. We have Bob Martin vet Zoe at hand to answer any questions you may have around ticks and to provide some accessible tick check tips so please send your questions by email to l.wright@bpgmedia.co.uk, and find your answers in next week's newsletter.
